Barn Fire in Rural Brookings County

Fire destroys a barn in rural Brookings County. It happened yesterday morning around 11am at 196th Street, west of 471st Avenue.

Upon arrival, fire crews found the barn and surrounding round hay bales completely engulfed in flames. Responders battled the blaze for approximately three hours before successfully extinguishing the fire.

The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office reports a number of goats, chickens, and cats perished in the blaze, but the horses and cattle that had been in the barn escaped unscathed. Damage is estimated at almost $49,000. Cause of the fire is unknown and the Sheriff’s department is investigating.

Crews from the Sheriff’s Office, South Dakota Highway Patrol, Brookings County Emergency Management, Estelline Fire Department, Brookings Fire Department, Aurora Fire Department, Bruce Fire Department, Volga Fire Department, White Fire Department, and the Toronto Fire Department all responded.
