First West Nile Detection Reported

The South Dakota Health Department reports the first two human West Nile virus detection’s of the 2022 season. The cases came in Minnehaha and Spink Counties.
The State Health department advises people to protect themselves with mosquito repellents containing DEET and by limiting outdoor time from dusk to midnight when mosquitoes are most active. Property owners can help by removing areas that provide stagnant, standing water for mosquitoes to breed in.
Since 2002, South Dakota has recorded more than 2,600 and 47 deaths resulting from West Nile Virus.
