Rapid City man fatally shot by police officer

A Rapid City man was fatally shot by a Rapid City Police officer Friday morning at an apartment building. The man, whose name has not been released, was taken to the hospital where he was declared dead.

According to Chief of Police Don Hedrick, police received a report about 5:30 a.m. that a man was running through the hallways of the building. The officer was reportedly confronted by the man who, Hedrick said, “sprinted at the officer” with a large buthcher knife and the offcier fired at the suspect. Hedrick says the officer was not injured and administered life saving measures on the suspect after he was shot.

Witnesses told police that the man had earlier been stabbing himself with the knife.

The state Division of Criminal Investigation has now taken over the case. The DCI usually releases a report within 30 days of an officer-involved shooting.
