South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley has released a draft ballot explanation for a proposed constitutional amendment that would revise state legislative term limits.

The amendment, submitted by State Senator Brent Hoffman of Sioux Falls, would impose a lifetime total of eight years in the State House of Representatives and eight years in the State Senate.

Currently, there is a limit of eight years consecutively in either chamber. There’s nothing preventing someone from alternating between the chambers for as long as they can win elections.

Te public has 10 days to provide written comment on the proposed language. The final explanation is due to the Secretary of State on June 14th.

The draft amendment would require just over 35-thousand valid petition signatures to qualify for the 2024 general election ballot.
