Two men nabbed for stealing duck decoys in Brookings

Two men caught in the act of stealing duck decoys in Brookings are facing felony charges and charges are pending against two others.

Police Lt. Marci Gebers says this was reported Tuesday morning shortly before 3:00 am. The residents of an apartment on the 1300 block of 3rd Street saw two men loading decoys into their pickup. When confronted, the two ran from the scene, leaving the pickup behind. The decoys were being stored in a trailer.

Police were able to identify and locate the two men. They found additional decoys and a sled that had been stolen earlier from the same location. Total value of the stolen items is about $2500.

Arrested were 22-year-old Kelby Hawkins of Groton and 21-year-old Aric Williams of Brookings. They’ve been charged with grand theft and burglary in the 3rd degree.

Gebers says two other men are believed to have been involved and charges are pending.
