Vaccination distribution shifts in Brookings County

Vaccination rates have slowed in Brookings County. Since April 5, when the state entered Phase Two of the vaccination plan, 3500 South Dakotans have received a shot. More than 5800 people were vaccinated in March.

Brookings Health System President and CEO Jason Merkley says vaccine enthusiasm has definitely plateaued.

The goal is to reach herd immunity — when 70 to 90 percent of the population has either survived infection or received the vaccine. Vaccination is a far safer path. Based on Brookings County’s population, 24,500 to 31,500 people need to be vaccinated. As of Friday, just under 14,000 county residents have received at least one dose. That’s about 40% of the population.

Because of reduced demand, the County will shift from vaccination centers to appointments and walk-ins at the local pharmacies and clinics.

Demand has dropped so much that for the past four weeks Brookings Health System has not ordered additional vaccine doses from the Department of Health, instead opting to use up current supplies.

Avera Medical Group Brookings will administer Pfizer vaccines by appointment on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays during regular clinic hours. Sanford Health Brookings Clinic offers Moderna, Johnson & Johnson and Pfizer vaccines during regular clinic appointments.

Also, Hy-Vee Pharmacy, Lewis Drug, Brothers Pharmacy and Walmart Pharmacy have vaccine available.
