Watertown City Hall project comes in way over budget

WATERTOWN, S.D.– The City of Watertown has run into a major issue with it’s plan to remodel the former downtown Wells Fargo Bank building into a new City Hall.

KWAT radio reports The Watertown City Council Monday rejected the only bid they received for the work since it was nearly $2.5 million over budget.

The project has been put on hold and the city will attempt to negotiate with the bidder, Gray Construction of Watertown, in an attempt to get it done for less money.

Such a process is allowed under state law.

The city purchased the building in 2020 for $1.3 million but would require an addition in order to serve as city hall.
