A five-year-old Brookings girl is injured in a Tuesday evening hit and run accident.

Police detective Adam Smith says the girl was riding a strider bike with family members on Medary Avenue South. They stopped at the intersection with 5th Street South before starting to cross.

A Jeep, being driven by 27-year-old Lindsay Johnson of Brookings, was eastbound and stopped at the stop sign. Johnson didn’t see the family crossing the road and turned south onto Medary, clipping the left side of the girl. Johnson left the scene without stopping to check for injuries.

The juvenile female was wearing a helmet and was able to keep herself from falling off her bike. She was taken to Brookings Hospital by a family member for minor injuries.

A motorist was able to get a vehicle description and license plate number of the suspect vehicle. Officers located Johnson at her residence and she was arrested for failure to report an accident.
