August death in Brookings County ruled suicide

Brookings County States Attorney Dan Nelson issues a press release on a death in Brookings County several months ago.

The release states: “On August 8, 2023, law enforcement became aware of Kyla Red Bear’s death in Brookings County. Multiple law enforcement agencies responded and began a comprehensive investigation in the weeks following. At the conclusion of that investigation, it was determined Ms. Red Bear died as the result of a self-inflicted injury. No foul play or any other criminal activity was suspected. The case is closed, and no further investigative efforts are underway.”

No other information has been released.

Questions have been circulating about the death since the body was discovered in a wooded area on the eastern edge of Brookings. She had gone missing several days earlier.
