Brookings Municipal Utilities warns of electricity shut-off scam

Brookings Municipal Utilities has taken reports of people receiving phone calls or text messages informing them that their electricity will be turned off in the next 30-40 minutes if they don’t call the number listed. They have been out of town numbers.

This is a scam. Do not call back the number listed on the message. BMU does not handle disconnects in this manner.

BMU says they have a protocol in place that is followed for disconnecting customers.

To report suspicious activity or if you have a question on your account status, contact Brookings Municipal Utilities at 692-6325.
