The longtime annual spring cleanup program in Brookings has a new name: Spring Bulky Item Pickup.

We hope the name change will help people better understand the purpose of this annual service provided by the City,” said Solid Waste Manager Charlie Kuhn. “The intent is and always has been to provide residents an opportunity to dispose of large branches and large bulky items that will not fit in their carts. Small items that fit in the garbage, recycling or yard waste carts should not be placed on boulevards.”

The Spring Bulky Item Pickup program is for Brooking city residents only; it is not available to commercial businesses.

DATES

• Wednesday, April 10: First day to start placing items on boulevards.

• Sunday, April 14: Last day to separate and place items on boulevards.

• Monday, April 15: City crews will begin pickup.

• April 15 - April 27: The Brookings Regional Landfill will be open for free dumping for city residents from 7:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 8:00 to 11:45 a.m. Saturday.  A photo ID or utility bill will be required to prove City residency for free dumping.

GUIDELINES

Households must follow the guidelines and timelines, or their materials will not be picked up, said Katie Stiegelmeier, Business Operations and Logistics Manager for the Solid Waste Division.

All items must be separated and placed on boulevards, even if snow is present. There is no alley pickup. Crews will canvass the city one time only. People are asked to refrain from parking in front of piles during the pickup period. The City’s landfill regulations and recycling policies require that items placed on boulevards be sorted. People should separate metals, branches and bulky items into three distinct piles.  Household refuse should be placed in residents’ green garbage carts. Cardboard should be put in the blue recycling carts. Grass and leaves should be placed in the brown yard waste carts for curbside pickup, which will begin April 1.

TREE BRANCHES

Branches should be placed lengthwise on the boulevard parallel to the street. Tree trunks and branches must not be more than 12 inches in diameter and 6 feet long. Starting April 1, residents will be able to drop off branches at the Landfill’s Citizens Campus 24/7.

ITEMS NOT ACCEPTED

Paint, batteries, waste oil, chemicals, and hazardous are not accepted.

ITEMS THAT WILL NOT BE PICKED UP
