Man sentenced for 2021 rape and murder of elderly Rapid City woman

A Pennington County judge sentenced 48-year-old James Jumping Eagle to life in prison for first-degree murder plus 50 years for rape.
In February of 2021, Jumping Eagle raped and murdered 82-year-old Reta McGovern in her Rapid City home.
The prosecution noted Jumping Eagle’s history, including the rape of two other women and the threat he poses to society.
The Judge told Jumping Eagle he doesn’t deserve to have a day of freedom in his natural life.
